Children's gut-health products imply a child's microbiome is an adult's, scaled down and slightly behind. The developmental data says something more interesting: it is a different system on its own timeline.
The microbiome assembles in phases
Stewart and colleagues tracked gut microbiome development in early childhood in the TEDDY study — the largest such cohort — and published it in Nature.[1] They described development in distinct phases rather than a smooth ramp: a developmental phase, a transitional phase around the introduction of solid food, and a stable phase as the community matures toward an adult-like configuration. Breastfeeding cessation, not the arrival of solids per se, was the strongest driver of the shift toward maturity.
Children's microbiomes are genuinely different
Yatsunenko and colleagues compared gut microbiomes across age and geography in Nature and found composition varies dramatically with both — infant communities differ markedly from adult ones and converge only gradually.[2] Early life is Bifidobacterium-heavy for a concrete reason: breast milk contains oligosaccharides the infant cannot digest but bifidobacteria can. The system is built to feed particular microbes at particular stages.
What this means practically
It argues for food over product. The levers with real support are the ordinary ones — varied fibre from real foods, since diet shifts the microbiome rapidly and reproducibly,[3] and habitual rather than occasional intake, since low-fibre diets drove microbiota losses that compounded across generations in mice.[4]
For supplements the same rule applies as for adults, with less margin: effects are strain-specific and do not generalize,[5] and a children's product naming only a genus gives you nothing to verify.
