The connection between gut bacteria and mood is one of the most actively studied areas of the gut-brain axis, but the evidence is still largely correlational. In a cohort of over 1,000 people, butyrate-producing Faecalibacterium and Coprococcus were linked to higher quality-of-life scores, while Coprococcus and Dialister were depleted in people with depression — a pattern that held even after accounting for antidepressant use.[1]
Mechanistically, gut microbes produce or influence neuroactive compounds — short-chain fatty acids and precursors related to serotonin, dopamine and GABA — and signal to the brain via the vagus nerve, immune system and endocrine pathways.[3] But it remains unproven whether microbiome differences cause depression, are a consequence of it, or both. No microbiome test can diagnose depression, and no probiotic is an established treatment for it.[2]
