Some of the strongest causal evidence comes from transfer experiments in animals. In 2016, Zheng and colleagues reported that transplanting microbiota from depressed patients into germ-free mice induced depressive-like behaviours, implicating a pathway mediated by host metabolism.[1]
A parallel 2016 study by Kelly and colleagues — "Transferring the blues" — extended this to rats: fecal microbiota from depressed patients induced behavioural and physiological features of depression in recipients, along with altered tryptophan metabolism.[2]
The largest human signal
Valles-Colomer and colleagues (2019) analysed gut metagenomes of more than a thousand people. Butyrate-producing Faecalibacterium and Coprococcus were consistently associated with higher quality-of-life indicators, while Coprococcus and Dialister were depleted in people with depression — even after correcting for antidepressant use.[3]
The human studies are observational and cannot prove microbial changes cause depression rather than resulting from it. Animal transplants show causation is biologically possible; the human evidence is correlational.
The bacteria repeatedly linked to better mood are butyrate producers that thrive on fibre — which is why foods that support a steadier mood, fibre and fermented foods keep coming up. None of this is a treatment for depression, which needs professional care.
